Industry | FTTR Moves from Homes to Campuses: Opportunities for Drop Cable and Pre-terminated Assemblies

2026-10-28

FTTR (fiber to the room) is spreading from homes into hotels, campuses and office buildings. Compared with residential use, campus projects have longer runs, more branches and shorter installation windows, which changes the requirements for drop cable and assemblies.

Bend radius comes first. Indoor routing often follows corners and door frames; ordinary drop cable shows noticeable loss below a 15 mm radius. Bend-insensitive G.657.A2 fiber with a finished-cable minimum radius of 15 mm or less is preferable.

Flame rating and environmental performance come next. Hotels and hospitals typically require LSZH jackets, and some projects ask for bundled flame test results. Buyers should confirm jacket material and flame class, not just fiber type.

Installation speed is the third factor. FTTR rooms are often handled by a single technician; pre-terminated drop cable removes field splicing and can cut per-point installation from about 20 minutes to under five. These assemblies depend on end-face geometry and consistent insertion/return loss, so test reports should be requested.

PTL's drop cable range covers GJXH, GJXFH and GJYXCH constructions, available with LSZH jackets and pre-terminated ends, with structure data and standards listed on each product page.
