Coaxial cables are classified by application into baseband and broadband types, and by impedance into 50Ω baseband and 75Ω broadband cables. Baseband cables are used for digital transmission at data rates up to 10 Mbps.
Typical transmission distances for the SYV75 video series: 75-3 about 100 m, 75-5 about 300 m, 75-7 about 500-800 m, 75-9 about 1000-1500 m, and 75-12 up to 2000-3500 m, where "75" is the characteristic impedance and "-3" is the dielectric diameter.
By diameter, cables are divided into thick and thin types: thick cable suits larger local networks with longer reach and higher reliability but requires transceivers and costs more; thin cable is cheaper with shorter reach. Traditional bus-topology thick/thin networks are being replaced by unshielded twisted pair and optical fiber.
Selection tip: determine transmission distance based on cable specification, signal type, and site conditions, and keep margin on critical links with low-loss models.
